Oh, that’s a really noble dream you have. I really hope that you succeed in attaining that. I don’t know about internships or part-time jobs in addiction treatment centers. Do you have a background in psychology? If so, there are some that might be willing to take you in. I think they require counselors to take up a program or some courses in addiction counseling first before they become qualified. Anyway, the links below can help you in finding treatment centers. Good luck!

You could ask at Maine General Medical Center. The Waterville campus has a psychiatric ward that deals with addiction. There’s also a psych ward in Lewiston. If you haven’t taken any psych courses, it’s not too late to sign up at UMA! They don’t stop registration until add/drop week in September. Good luck!

UMA-although, I can’t personally say I believe in their philosphy behind addiction. They teach very much “old school-AA only” addiction treatment.

There is also a program at USM which is an associates degree.

You can get a degree in any mental health field-but then you have to do specialized internships and education in addiction fields in order to sit for your LADC (Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor). In Maine you can’t be a supervisor without this specific license.

Your best bet would be to contact the Office of Substance Abuse, who can give you the requirements or get you in touch with the licensing board so they can tell you exactly what you need to do. Good luck!
